Introduction

The Reclaiming Our History project was a community-led initiative throughout 2023 and 2024 with the goal of compiling and preserving historic photos and stories of our families, ancestors, and lands.

Forced relocation in the 20th century led to our community’s displacement from our homelands on the southeast shores of Lake Nipigon, and while some of that land was reclaimed in 2010, over 50 years of separation has resulted in lost opportunities to nurture, share, and celebrate our cultural identity.

During this project, our community members were encouraged to share photographs of their families, our traditional lands, and other important ties to BNA alongside stories of life at Sand Point. Additional genealogy research was completed by Aandeg Skelly to help enrich the collected content. This web gallery will be maintained by BNA’s Youth Council and Staff, adding media and stories as they are shared to continue preserving BNA’s history for future generations.

Miigwetch aapiji to the many supporters to this community photo album, including the BNA Project Team of Jake Alfieri, Aandeg Skelly, and Jordan Hatton; translators Marcel Donio (Ojibway) and Nicole Beaudoin (French); Sasha Wilson from CE Strategies; and the Museums Assistance Program.

Most importantly, we want to thank all contributors to the Photo Album. Your willingness to share your personal histories, memories, and collections has been the cornerstone of this project’s success, helping us to weave together a tapestry of BNA’s culture and spirit.

Introduction

Marcel Donio’s Ojibway translation was completed phonetically to assist people in the reading. As Ojibway is an oral language, there are different spellings for many words, and Elder Donio felt it would be of greater assistance to the reader if it was shown phonetically.

The Veterans of Sand Point

Indigenous people have fought with valour and distinction on the front lines of every major battle Canada has been involved in. It is estimated that 7,000 Indigenous people served in the First and Second World Wars, and the Korean War; as well as an unknown number of non-Status Indigenous soldiers.

Sand Point had a number of men volunteer to fight, including Eugene Legarde, Joseph P. Legarde, Ted Morriseau, and Robbie Netemegesic Donio. Post World Wars, our members have also continued to serve their country, including Guy and Art Gladu.

Returning Indigenous veterans did not receive the same financial support as their settler counterparts, some even losing their “Indian status” or sold reserve land for agriculture production during the war efforts. It was not until 1995, fifty years after the Second World War, that Indigenous people were allowed to lay Remembrance Day wreaths at the National War Memorial to remember and honour their loved ones.
